ASKAMS granted accreditation for Asbestos in Soils (Quantification)
ASKAMS are very pleased to announce we now offer UKAS accredited Identification and Quantification of Asbestos in Soils, Slurries and Aggregates. One of only 15
UKAS accreditation provides client re-assurance that our analytical procedures and reporting meet the highest standards in quality and are carried out by ASKAMS fully qualified, experienced, specialist staff.
Asbestos is present in most brownfield sites, due partly to the prolific use of Asbestos Containing materials (ACM’s) used in buildings over the last century. Along with poor practices in asbestos removal prior to demolition, asbestos used during manufacturing and industrial processes was routinely buried on site as a waste product. Unlike many other contaminants, deterioration of Asbestos Containing Materials often releases loose fibre into the soil which in turn increases the potential for human exposure. This is of major concern to the Construction Industry particularly during land reclamation, where dry dusty conditions are a constant factor.
Frances Bell, National Laboratory Manager stated “Identification and Quantification of Asbestos in Soils, Slurries and Aggregates provides our clients with information vital to allow them to make well informed decisions regarding work with contaminated land. Current regulations relating to asbestos and land contamination make it essential that the correct level of safeguards are identified, established and implemented. Disposal costs are a major concern to land developers and land owners, impacting dramatically on overall project cost. The ability to identify and quantify asbestos Soils, Slurries and Aggregates under UKAS accreditation provides our clients with the necessary confidence that results produced are both valid and appropriate. As well as identification and quantification of asbestos, ASKAMS also provide a range of services relating to asbestos in soil including site re-assurance air monitoring, survey and removal advice along with bespoke training designed to meet client requirements.
As part of our continued growth due to increased customer demand we now have two new bespoke laboratories at Warrington, increasing our capacity for asbestos analysis in bulk materials and also in soils, slurries & aggregates.

This is a very exciting development for the laboratory and we look forward to working closely with both new and existing clients “
ASKAMS actively participate in external proficiency testing schemes administered by the HSL including AISS (asbestos in soil scheme), AIMS (asbestos in materials scheme) and RICE (Regular Inter-laboratory Counting Exchange)

ASKAMS have 6 office locations around the UK with 3 UKAS accredited Labs capable of analysing up to 4500 samples a week. This financial year a further lab is planned for our South West region to support a number of large national contract wins.
