Durham Cathedral is a Romanesque masterpiece creating a window into an era of Britain’s 1000 years past. It is the only cathedral in England to retain almost all of its Norman craftsmanship, making it a truly special architectural work.
- One of the greatest buildings in Europe
- A World Heritage site
- Complex building structure and surveying environment
- City Centre High profile location
- Phased approach due to occupancy
ASKAMS COMPLIANCE SERVICES LTD’s involvement with this grand project is largely thanks to the Cathedral’s Open Treasure project as the Cathedral looks to transform the way visitors experience the Cathedral and gain inspiration from it. Much of the work ASKAMS will be doing is enabling work ahead of the next phase of Open Treasure which has recently received an award of £3.9 million from the Heritage Lottery fund. According to ASKAMS Managing Director Stewart McNicholl, “This is a great contract for ASKAMS COMPLIANCE SERVICES LTD to have been awarded. Durham Cathedral is an internationally recognised landmark and one the North East is very proud of” and ASKAMS is ready to get on site, as preliminary work begins early 2014.
The Work to Be Done:
As previously stated, ASKAMS COMPLIANCE SERVICES LTD will be completing a variety of tasks for the Cathedral. Initially, we will be completing a review of the current asbestos surveys with a total UKAS-accredited re-survey of all the properties owned by the cathedral, including the main cathedral and approximately 17 residential and office-use buildings associated with it.
“The software that the team at ASKAMS COMPLIANCE SERVICES LTD has developed is second to none. As the Property and Facilities Manager for a large site, and a widely dispersed property portfolio, I find the software an invaluable tool when wanting a quick update on what’s going on where and what the current status is on specific areas. The information is updated pretty much as the surveys happen so we can act immediately if need be. The feature of the software which allows limited access for contractors has also come in very handy up till now and the summary dashboard is great for overall facts and figures. Overall it has been very well thought out and as a general management tool it is superb.”
