CAT A – ASBESTOS AWARENESS

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Employees whose work could foreseeably expose them to asbestos.

AIM
To provide an awareness and develop the knowledge amongst employees as regards the hazards and risks posed by asbestos containing materials (ACM’s).

COURSE CONTENT
The training covers:

  • The properties of asbestos and how it can be damaging to your health, possibly giving you an increased risk of lung cancer if you are a smoker
  • The categories of asbestos, and how it is used in buildings and plants
  • How to deal with asbestos in an emergency
  • Avoiding risk from asbestos

CERTIFICATION
Candidates who pass will receive a UKATA Asbestos Awareness Certificate

CAT B – NON-LICENSABLE WORK WITH ASBESTOS INCLUDING NNLW

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Any persons carrying out non-licensed works with asbestos containing materials, as laid down in CAR 2012, Reg 3(2).

AIM
To provide candidates with the theoretical and practical skills to undertake non-licensed works with ACM’s.
Persons requiring this type of training would include trade operatives undertaking tasks with ACM’s as defined in HSG210 and in accordance with CAR 2012 Reg 3(2).

COURSE CONTENT
The training will cover:

  • How to assess the risk of a given asbestos exposure
  • The control limit and the purpose of air monitoring
  • Maintenance of control measures
  • How to record, report and correct defects
  • Safe work practices
  • Work hazards including working at height, electrical, slips and falls
  • Correct selection from a range of suitable RPE, including any limitations
  • Correct use, maintenance, cleaning and storage of RPE and PPE according to manufacturer instructions
  • Hygiene requirements
  • An introduction to the Regulations, Approved Codes of Practice and guidance that apply to asbestos work
  • The preventative measures to limit exposure
  • Decontamination procedures
  • Waste handling procedures
  • Personal sampling and leak and clearance sampling techniques for analysts
  •  Which work requires HSE licence

Candidates who pass will receive a UKATA Asbestos Awareness Certificate

EXAMS & ASSESSMENT
Candidates are required to pass a multiple choice question paper examination consisting of at least 15 questions under exam conditions.
A candidate will be required to achieve a score of at least 12 out of 15 in the examination. Failure to achieve this will result in the candidate being required to re-sit the examination under exam conditions. If a candidate fails the second attempt then they will be required to re-sit the course in its entirety.

DUTY TO MANAGE ASBESTOS

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Any  person who requires an overview of the duty to manage and legislative requirements. This would normally include, but is not limited to duty holder’s assistants, appointed person’s assistants, building owners, landlords, sublessors, managing agents etc and any person assisting duty holders in the compliance with CAR 2012 regulation 4.

  • Defining Work which is Non-Licensable and Licensable (inc NNLW)

CERTIFICATION
Candidates who pass will receive a UKATA Asbestos Awareness Certificate
